The Women that Shape Me: The Resume Fox
Five years ago, if you asked me if I would consider starting my own business, I would have laughed at you. Not in a “oh wow, that’s absurd” way, but in a “that thought has literally never crossed my mind” way. After two years of The Resume Fox, I am so grateful that life steered me in this direction and that I had strong female mentors to guide me in my entrepreneurship journey. In honor of Women’s History Month, I’d like to share the influential women who’ve shaped me.
My Nanna is a true example of hard work and perseverance. She and my Papa met at age 13 when they began working at a restaurant together. They climbed the ladder, eventually managing, and finally purchasing the well-respected restaurant, which they owned and operated for 50 years. My cousins and I watched our grandparents work tirelessly, and even worked alongside them on holidays once we were old enough. I learned so many things from my Nanna.
First, to prioritize family, even when work is busy. I am grateful that my grandparents were at every single sporting event and dance recital, even if it meant prepping the kitchen at 5am so they could leave to support me. Second, to put your heart, soul, and personal flair into your business. When walking around the restaurant, it was easy to find the little touches and knick-knacks that were just… Nanna. She trained the waitstaff to treat customers with respect and courtesy. Third, how to properly set a table. And for all that is holy, never deliver a drink if it’s not on a serving tray! And while I could share hundreds of other lessons Nanna has taught me, these are three of my favorites that I try to remember as a small business owner myself.
My Grammie was “my person.” Grey’s fans, you know what I mean. When I was 14, I told her she was my best friend. She moved me into my first dorm in college, decorated my first apartment, and we chatted every morning on my drive to work. I’d join her and Aunt Mary for wine - which was promptly at 5pm - and we’d chat like girlfriends. A business owner herself - she and her best friend had an interior decorating business. In 2019, she sent me an article that sparked the conception of The Resume Fox. Launching my business amidst the grief of losing my person has been the most challenging thing I’ve ever done. While she unfortunately is not physically here to cheer me along, I like to imagine her sporting a Resume Fox hat while enjoying a glass of white wine in heaven.
I am fortunate to have my Mom as a part of The Resume Fox’s cheerleading team, and also as a mentor in business ownership and leadership.
Following over 10 years of being a full-time mom and active volunteer, she launched her real estate business. I admire her for going after her dreams and helping others after she selflessly prioritized family for years.
Choosing from hundreds of accolades is challenging, as she embodies so many admirable qualities. One that she continues to teach me is the importance of engaging with her network and connecting with her sphere; something I hope to enhance as my business continues to grow. She is always just a phone call away, and I am fortunate to be able to pick her (incredibly intelligent) brain.
I am fortunate to have learned from female professionals turned role models. Many supported me when I was a young, hopeful HR professional, and they continue to cheer me on in various capacities. They took the time to teach me, lead by example, and share their wisdom. I hope to embody some of Lindy’s creativity, Shannon’s strength, Emily’s leadership, Amy’s eccentricity, Tiffany’s kind heart, Kate’s perseverance, Raelyn’s intuition, Ami’s professionalism, Charity’s confidence, and Helena’s ingenuity.
And as we remember the history of women, we must look towards the future of women. To Zoeii, Louise, and Bella, I have no doubt that you will grow up to be incredible women. I hope that your female role models light the way for you, and I am excited to see what the future holds. Love, Aunt O / LaLa
I am humbled to learn from strong women, honored to be a part of a community of female business owners, and truly grateful for the opportunity to grow.
If you’ve made it this far, I encourage you to reflect on the strong, impactful women in your life.
How have they shaped you?
What have they taught you?
What can you share with others?
If you feel inclined, I'd love to hear about the women in your life.
